    Homemade Baby Food

I get it, as a parent, it is hard to find time to do anything between the busy schedules and keeping the house somewhat clean. But making homemade baby food does not have to be stressful or time consuming.

You don’t need special kitchen tools like a baby food maker but I do recommend using a regular blender for some of these combinations to get a smooth texture. While some of the other combos only require a fork for smashing. It’s really that simple!

Of course, do your own research and ask your pediatrician for help if you’re not sure what to feed your baby.

    Benefits of Homemade Baby Food

Homemade baby food offers a multitude of benefits, allowing parents to provide their little ones with nutritious, delicious, and safe meals while fostering a positive and enjoyable feeding experience. Here are a few benefits to consider:

    • Nutritional Control: By preparing your baby food at home, you can have complete control over the ingredients used. You can choose to use organic, fresh, frozen, or avoid adding preservatives or unnecessary additives. This also allows you to be aware of potential allergens and avoid them, if necessary.
    • Variety: You can introduce your child to a range of different flavors and textures with homemade baby food. I like to gradually introduce different fruits, vegetables, grains, and spices to help develop the baby’s taste for a variety of foods.
    • Cost-Effective: Quality pre-made baby food can be pricey. I get it though, sometimes pre-packaged options are great and the best for your family. But if you want to make your own baby food, it does not have to cost a lot. Purchasing ingredients in bulk or repurposing meals you’re already making can help save on costs.

    How to Make Baby Food

Wash and Prep: Before handling any produce, start by washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Rinse fruits and vegetables under cool running water, then scrub them gently with a produce brush to remove any dirt or debris if needed. Peel or chop any produce that requires it.

Mash or Blend: Since this is a no-cook list of baby food, you won’t need to bake or steam any of the ingredients in this list. Make the baby food by simply mashing the ingredients with your fork or blending it in a blender for a smooth puree.
Serve and Store: Since there isn’t any cooking involved with these recipes, you should be able to serve the baby food right away. Always store any leftovers in a clean, airtight container in the refrigerator.

    Kitchen Tools Needed

With each of my children, we made their baby food purees using this simple blender we already had. You don’t need to purchase a specific baby food blender unless you really want to. Here are a few other kitchen tools I like to have on hand for preparing and storing homemade baby food:

    • Fork for mashing
    • Blender (no need for special baby food blenders)
    • Glass containers for fridge storage
    • Baby food tray and baby food spoon
    • Silicone trays for freezing
    • Silicone reusable freezer bags

    Storage Tips For Baby Food

Refrigerate or Freeze: You can store homemade baby food in the refrigerator in an airtight container for around 2-3 days. Freezing baby food is also a great option. Store in the freezer for up to 3 months. I like to use these food safe baby food trays and then transfer them into labeled freezer-safe bags.

Label: Always label each container so you know what type of food was used and when it was made. This helps keep track of freshness and ingredients.

Thaw: You can thaw homemade baby food in the refrigerator overnight. Alternatively, you can use the microwave or stovetop to heat up. Make sure to test the food before you serve in case it is too hot.

    More Ideas and Combinations

    • To thin any of the purees, add breastmilk, formula, or water until desired consistency is reached.
    • Add texture to the purees with ground flaxseed, hemp seeds, or cooked oatmeal.
    • For more complex flavors, add seasoning like ground cinnamon or nutmeg.
