Why make a galette instead of a pie?
It’s no secret that I am a fan of pie but sometimes you want the taste of pie without the prep work required to get the perfect crust edges. Enter the galette. Because galettes are baked free-form and not in a pie dish, they have a more rustic appearance. Pies are considered more of a classic dessert but galettes are just as tasty and are a twist on the classic.
Ingredients in gluten free caramel apple galette
There are surprisingly very few ingredients in this apple galette. You’ll need a few fresh, tart baking apples like honeycrisp or pink lady. Combine with some of the best spices for fall and topped with a homemade caramel sauce for a tasty dessert.
- Gluten free pie crust - We have a recipe on the blog for our simple gluten free pie crust. This crust is perfect for this recipe because it is flaky and holds up well against the lush apples.
- Apples - I love to use a variety of apples. Some of our favorites are honeycrisp, pink lady, and granny smith.
- Brown sugar - the sweetness balances out the tart flavors in the apples.
- Nutmeg and cinnamon - what is a fall dessert without these to classic flavors!
- Butter - I use Country Crock Plant Based Butter but you could substitute regular unsalted butter if not dairy free or vegan.
- Salt - just a bit of salt to balance out the sweetness.
- Arrowroot powder - this is added to the apple filling to make it less runny. You can substitute cornstarch if preferred.
How to make caramel apple galette
Make the crust according to the recipe directions. Note this galette calls for one gluten free 9-inch pie dough. Let the dough chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, make the apple filling. Mix together the sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt and arrowroot powder. Set in the refrigerator until the dough and caramel sauce is ready.
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees fahrenheit. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or silicone baking mat.
Roll the dough into a 12-inch circle that is ⅛ inch thick on the prepared baking sheet.
Place the apple filling in the center of the dough. Arrange by stacking the slices or simply spread them out leaving a 3 inch border on the sides. Gently fold the edges toward the center, overlapping the dough when necessary.
Make the caramel sauce. To make the caramel sauce, heat a small saucepan with butter, brown sugar, vanilla, and salt. Heat on medium-high until the butter is melted and the sauce starts to bubble and thicken. Remove from heat and pour over the apple filling.
Bake until the crust starts to golden slightly and the filling is bubbly, about 40-45 minutes. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
