What are overnight oats?
Overnight oats can be as simple or as complicated as you want them to be. The most basic form of overnight oats is just oats soaked in milk overnight in the fridge. Now, here at With Sweet Honey, we like flavor so we’ve added a bit more ingredients to jazz this recipe up! First, I will go over the simple peanut butter overnight oats recipe but I will also share more flavor ideas which might spark some ideas for your own combination. Enjoy!
What you'll like this recipe
Simple: It doesn’t get much easier than overnight oats. Simply stir all of the ingredients together and let it soak in the refrigerator overnight. The longest part is just letting it sit in the fridge while you sleep! No cooking or baking required!
Customizable: The possibilities are endless when it comes to the flavor combinations you can do with overnight oats. I will share some below but don’t be afraid to experiment with your favorite flavors!
Health benefits: This recipe is protein packed! With the added peanut butter and oats, this recipe should keep you fuller longer and could be great after a workout.
Make ahead: Overnight oats are awesome for making ahead and having throughout the week. Store in individual jars so you can grab and go!
Ingredients for peanut butter overnight oats
Rolled oats: I use gluten free old fashioned rolled oats for overnight oats. You can use instant oats instead of rolled oats but the texture and consistency will be slightly different.
Peanut Butter: You can use creamy or chunky peanut butter in this recipe. I use natural unsalted creamy peanut butter.
Milk: I prefer using unsweetened vanilla almond milk but you can use whatever milk you have on hand, regular or dairy free.
Maple Syrup: Maple syrup adds a little bit of sweetness to the oats so adjust according to your preference. You can also substitute the maple syrup with honey.
Vanilla Extract: For that delicious vanilla flavor!
Ground Cinnamon: Cinnamon adds a little something extra to this basic recipe. It can be skipped but I love the added cinnamon flavor.
Salt: Just a pinch of salt if your peanut butter is unsalted. Skip if you prefer.
Additional flavor ideas
Mix these additional ingredients in with the peanut butter overnight oats base recipes for a little added flavor!
Strawberry Cacao
¼ cup strawberries, chopped
1 tbsp cacao nibs
Banana Bread
½ banana, mashed
1 tbsp chia seeds
What jars to use
Any container with a lid will work for overnight oats but here are a few options I use regularly. For individual servings, I love to use these little glass jars with lids. These jars are the ones shown in the images in this post. Mason jars also make a great option and many of us already have those. If you just want to keep the overnight oats in one large container, Tupperware, or large mason jars are all great options.
Serve hot or cold?
Either! I usually prefer my overnight oats to be served cold with fresh fruit on top but you can heat them up and serve them like a traditional oatmeal.
How to store
Store your overnight oats in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. Alternatively, you can freeze the overnight oats for up to 2 months.
