Don’t think you have to miss out on sloppy joes if you’re following Whole30 or Paleo diets! There’s options for you! I’m here to tell you that you won’t want just a regular ol’ sloppy joe sandwich after you try the Whole30 sloppy joe bowls I’m about to tell you about below.

    Why you’ll love this recipe:

Flavor: They have that yummy sloppy joe flavor that we all love but without any not-so-great ingredients.

Customizable: Swap out the regular hamburger bun with delicious roasted sweet potatoes topped with Whole30 sloppy joe meat. Don’t like pickles? No problem! Add something else instead or leave out!

Ingredients: These sloppy joes are made with real ingredients and are Whole30 and Paleo friendly.

    Ingredients needed

    For the sloppy joe meat:

    • Ground Beef: I use grass-fed beef but feel free to substitute the ground beef with ground turkey or another ground meat if you prefer.
    • Onion:
    • Garlic
    • Tomato Paste
    • Tomato Sauce
    • Dijon Mustard
    • Coconut Aminos
    • Seasoning

    For the sloppy joe bowls:

    • Sweet Potatoes
    • Jalapeños
    • Pickles

*See recipe card below for quantities and details.

    How to make

Step 1: For the sweet potato cubes: Preheat the oven 425°F and line baking sheet with parchment paper. Toss the sweet potato cubes with olive oil and salt in a medium bowl. Spread the sweet potato cubes onto the baking sheet and roast for 30 minutes, stirring halfway through.

Step 2: For the sloppy joe meat: Meanwhile, heat a large skillet with olive oil on medium-high heat. Add the onion and garlic. Stir and cook until the onion is translucent (about 5 minutes).

Step 3: Reduce the heat to medium and add the ground beef. Cook until the beef is browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat from the pan and return to the stove.

Step 4: Add the tomato paste, tomato sauce, dijon mustard, coconut aminos, basil, oregano, chili powder, paprika, salt and pepper. Stir and let simmer until sloppy joe meat is hot and enough water has evaporated (3-5 minutes). Add more water if the sloppy joe mixture is too dry.

Step 5: Assemble the bowl: Add some of the roasted sweet potato cubes into a bowl then place some sloppy joe meat on top. Finally, top with pickles and jalapeños and anything else you’d like. Enjoy!

Can I substitute other ground meat?

Yes, you can use other ground meat like ground turkey, pork or chicken instead of the beef. I love using ground turkey in recipes (like in our Best Slow Cooker Turkey Chili Recipe) for an alternative to beef.

    Can I make it spicy?

The sloppy joe meat by itself is pretty mild but you can adjust the spice level by adding more chili powder or adding some dried cayenne pepper. The sloppy joe bowl that I suggest also calls for jalapeños but that’s based off personal preference and feel free to leave off or add more.

How do you store sloppy joe meat?

Store the sloppy joe meat in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days. You can also freeze the meat for up to 3 months. Once ready to use, thaw the sloppy joe meat in the refrigerator and reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop.
